ABOUT THIS MAP

A source-backed map of the world’s data centers

Datacenters on Map shows where the physical infrastructure behind the internet, cloud computing and AI is located. It maps 4,661 data-center records in 112 countries, from single buildings to hyperscale campuses, alongside projects in development and cloud regions. Search by city or operator, filter by status, and move the timeline from 2007 to today. Every record links to the source it came from.

The Power use guides explain how much electricity data centers use and why demand is rising, using figures from the IEA, national statistics and company reports.

Where the data comes from

  • OpenStreetMap: 4,599 records tagged as data centers by volunteer mappers, dated from the OpenStreetMap edit history. ODbL.
  • Official operator sources: 33 records from Google’s data-center directory, Meta’s own announcements and Google Cloud’s region documentation.
  • Wikidata: opening years, photos and descriptions where linked. CC0.
  • Electricity: IEA estimates, Ireland’s Central Statistics Office and Meta’s published campus reports.

What this map is not

  • Not a complete list. Coverage depends on what has been mapped, and it varies by country. A missing marker does not mean no data center exists.
  • Status is mostly unverified. 4,619 of 4,661 records (99%) carry no confirmed operating status. A data-center tag alone does not prove a site is running.
  • Records are not deduplicated. One campus can appear as one area or as several buildings, so counts are not facility or market-share totals.
  • Timeline years mark documentation, not openings. Early years undercount because mapping grew sharply after 2016.
  • No guessed numbers. Capacity and AI use are left unknown unless a source states them. Locations and country assignments can be approximate.
